Jack finally cut his first tooth last week!

We woke up Thursday morning to the cutest — and sharpest — little white cap sticking up through our guy’s bottom gum line.

I breathed a sigh of relief as soon as I felt the tiny dagger in his mouth because, holy moly, teething is not fun for everyone involved. And the last couple of days before that tooth cut were some of the saddest as Jack was clearly in pain.

Before having Jack, I never knew that teething impacts every aspect of a baby’s life, especially when they are cutting those first teeth. Their sleep is disrupted, they don’t eat as well, their gums are sore, they tug on their ears from the discomfort, they drool (which causes chapped cheeks and chin), and they can develop diaper rash from swallowing the extra saliva produced by their drool.

Basically, teething can mean months and months of symptoms and discomfort for your little one.

And Jack has been showing signs of teething since 4 months old, so we certainly did a celebratory dance when this first tooth broke through at almost 8 months old. I’ve read that teething gets easier for babies after they cut the first couple because they become used to the feeling — here’s to hoping that’s true!

Today, though, let’s talk about what we do to soothe two of the Jack’s uncomfortable teething symptoms: diaper rash and chapped face due to drooling.

Like any new mom (OK, maybe not any but those of us who worry about everything), I panicked the first time Jack got a diaper rash. I immediately turned to Google to learn what we should do to relieve it and quickly placed Jack in a lukewarm bath.

After his bath I lathered his bottom with Earth Mama’s Organic Diaper Balm. I bought this balm when I was pregnant and preparing Jack’s nursery with anything and everything I could think of before he arrived. I’m so thankful I had that balm on hand.

The next morning, Jack’s rash was completely gone.

We’ve repeated this process with this exact balm for each diaper rash since.

For his chapped little cheeks and chin (thanks to all the extra drool), I have been using Earth Mama’s Organic Baby Face Nose & Cheek Balm to soothe his delicate skin. The consistency of this balm reminds me of petroleum jelly (just without the icky ingredients), so it is very moisturizing and quickly clears up dry skin.

Other than working well and working fast — proving that you don’t have to sacrifice effectiveness when choosing better-for-you products — the best part about both of these Earth Mama products is that they are now [Environmental Working Group] EWG Verified, meaning their ingredients are clean and safe.

Products marked as EWG Verified are guaranteed free from EWG’s chemicals of concern and meet EWG’s strict health standards.

Choosing products for our home, and especially for Jack, that are EWG Verified is most important to me. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I don’t have to wonder or worry about harmful, toxic ingredients for the smallest member of our family or for Justin and myself. I actively try to buy only products (from household cleaning products to beauty products) that are EWG Verified or rated as a “1” by EWG.

In fact, I have actively sought out Earth Mama products since I was pregnant (their belly butter and oil were my favorites and we all know that the Herbal Perineal Spray for postpartum is the best ) because I can trust their ingredients.

If your little one is in the throes of teething and experiencing a drooly face or uncomfortable diaper rash, I recommend having Earth Mama’s Organic Diaper Balm and Organic Baby Face Nose & Cheek Balm on hand and ready to go to soothe their skin.
