What’s the old adage? If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again?

That’s the stance I took when upcycling a headboard I scored on Facebook Marketplace for our guest bedroom. And trust me — I tried and tried making my vision for this furniture piece come to life and was disappointed at each turn before I finally landed on a solution that I absolutely love.
Back in April I shared some design inspiration for our modern coastal guest bedroom. Since the space is relatively small at about 10-feet by 10-feet, I wanted the bed to be a statement piece. But I didn’t want to drop a ton of cash on it.
I started scouring Facebook Marketplace and found a great deal on a headboard and armoire — $100 total for both items! I knew I wouldn’t be able to use the armoire in the guest bedroom, but it is a solid piece that I can use somewhere else in the house so I took it and the headboard.
Here’s what the headboard looked like originally. It’s actually a really heavy piece and great quality.

It simply needed a little love.
I made several attempts at modernizing the headboard (mostly with hemp cord), but each time I tried something new it failed.
I was ready to give up and scratch the project all together when I got an idea to toss out the hemp cord and use raw wood instead. Specifically, half-round moulding.
Finally, I had a clear vision of how this project would turn out and was thrilled to work on it.

It took 27 8-foot pieces of moulding cut into thirds to cover the front of the headboard (which I had already spray painted bright white, by the way).

I glued the moulding using a combination of wood glue and high temperature hot glue. The hot glue was more efficient, in my opinion. The best part is, it only took about 2 hours to complete from start to finish!

And I am obsessed with the result!

The headboard definitely makes a statement in the bedroom and provides the natural elements I was hoping for with the raw wood. But it’s still bright and airy for the space!

Now to finish trimming out the room and we can close the door on this entire makeover!
