When we started building our home last year, we were drawn to the floor plan we selected because of the loft space upstairs. I knew it would be a great family room for us that could double as Jack’s playroom.
Now that we’ve been in our home for 9 months, I can tell you that we, in fact, spend a lot of time in the loft. Like, a lot a lot. It’s where we play, watch TV and generally enjoy family moments.
While it’s a great space for our family of three, it’s also a blank canvas with a ton of potential. In thinking about how to make the best use of our loft, I knew I needed to be intentional with my design. Ample storage for books, art supplies and toys is necessary and the top priority. I also want a design that encourages floor play and is comfortable for all three of us. And I need it to be pretty with soft tones and textures.
We play hard in here each day. But when Justin and I sit down to watch TV together at night after Jack goes to bed, I want to be able to tuck away all of his toys so we don’t see them. Reducing clutter is essential to my mental health, so I need to be able to hide Jack’s toys at night in order to relax.
To tackle toy storage, I planned out DIY built in cabinets that go around our TV. The design features a built in activity table under the TV that will give Jack a place to play with his train set or color (his favorite activity). The lower cabinets will provide the exact right spot to conceal toys. This DIY design from Thrifty Decor Chick is what I based my design off of.
Here’s what the space looks like now:
The built in cabinets won’t go wall to wall so we can utilize the left corner of the wall as a cozy reading space with piles of comfy floor pillows.
To the right of the cabinets we will hang a fun rattan chair from the ceiling. I love these chairs in playrooms and how they add a sense of whimsy!
A neutral rug and statement making light fixture will anchor the room, while blue velvet curtains provide texture and warmth.
We can’t forget our favorite storage baskets, of course! And an air purifying fiddle leaf fig tree. We will have plenty of room for Jack’s play kitchen, as well.
I am excited to see our hybrid play room/family room come together over the winter months. I hope you’ll follow along with my progress!
